Is Home Designer a Viable Career Option?

Home designers are a special breed of interior designers who specialize in creating structure, function, and visual appeal within residential spaces. They select furniture and accessories, create color schemes, plan designs and coordinate construction work. To become a home designer, you need at least an associate's degree or bachelor's degree in interior design or architecture. The National Association of Schools of Art and Design accredits more than 360 post-secondary schools, universities and independent institutes that have art and design programs. Once you determine what is possible and desired, you can get to work creating plans for the interior design work.

Interior designers may also need to obtain special materials. For example, if a customer wants to use recovered materials for their home, they may need to locate the plates, hardware, etc. correct. You can also provide them with resources and ask them to select and purchase materials. Along the way, you'll need to check with the customer to make sure they're happy with the progress.
